✿ LECTURE RECAP ✿
Week 1
During week 1, our module lecturer, Mr. Martin gave us a short briefing
about this module, Digital Photography and Imaging. After introducing to
us the assignment, we are assigned to use to website “The Bezier” to
practice how to use the pen tool in Photoshop. We need to post the result
in the docx created by Mr. Martin.
In the docx, we also need to find 3 favorite graphic design works done by
Photoshop on Pinterest and explain why we like the design.
Figure 1.1 Graphic design "https://pin.it/2xDbL18"
Description: In this design, the designer split the character’s face into
three sections and added some stone elements in the gaps created by the
splits to create a sense of fragmentation.
Figure 1.2 Graphic design "https://pin.it/5ipQUyh"
Description: In this design, the designer placed a dilapidated house on land
suspended in mid-air. The land is protected by something similar to bubbles,
and the design resembles a crystal ball.
Figure 1.3 Graphic design "https://pin.it/1O0yJEa"
Description: In this design, the designer placed the character in a
pitch-black environment and combined him with a candle, with his head turned
into a candle.
Week 2
In week 2, we learned about the basics of Photoshop and practiced using tools
such as Select and Mask to remove backgrounds from images and replace them
with a new background. We also learned about various selection tools like
lasso, pen, and magic wand. The practical session involved working on Project
1, which required creating a digital collage and carrying out a Photoshop
exercise using select and mask tools and composition techniques. Mr. Martin
evaluated our collage compositions and provided feedback for finalization and
submission.
Week 3
In week 3, we learned how to recolor images in Adobe Photoshop. The process
involves selecting and masking the area to be colored into a layer, adding the
desired color, and changing the layer type to soft light or overlay for
blending. We practiced using the provided tools in class.

✿ COLLAGE DESIGN ✿
For this physical collage, I decided to choose my materials from Canva.
Figure 5.1 Screenshot of materials I found in Canva.
After I print it out, I start to combine them into three different collages.

Figure 5.3 Third collage
I'm not particularly satisfied with my three collages. I feel like something is
missing, but I don't know what to add. So I decided to use my third collage as
my final design because compared to the first two, the third one will be more
abstract.

✿ DIGITAL COLLAGE ✿
We were given the assignment to create a digital collage using Adobe
Photoshop. we were provided with a selection of pictures to use but encouraged
to be creative and use the full range of Photoshop functions.
We were assigned to find the picture that we were going to use for a digital
collage on Pinterest.
Figure 5.5 Process digital collage
My idea for the digital collage is a very dreamy place, which is not in space
or on land. In this place, you can see the moon and buildings up close at the
same time. Fish fly in the sky instead of swimming in the water. In addition,
there is a floating island nearby.

✿ DIGITAL IMAGING ✿
Exercise 1: Hearst Mansion
Project 1, Exercise 1 of Digital Photography and Imaging requires us to take a
full body image of ourselves and use Adobe Photoshop to crop it out and put
ourselves into a background of the Hearst Mansion provided by the lecturer. We
are recommended to take a picture with a clean background so it will be easy
for us to remove the background by masking.

Adobe Photoshop.

Exercise 1: The Breakdown
Project 1, Exercise 2 of Digital Photography and Imaging requires us to
recolor a greyscale photo provided by Mr. Martin. There is a lot of photo
provided by Mr. Martin, and I decided to choose the greyscale photo of Kobe
Bryant.
Figure 7.1 Greyscale photo of Kobe Bryant
First, I went to google the photo of Kobe Bryant to get the skin color of
Kobe Bryant.
Second, I have selected the area I want to recolor by using the Quick
Selection tool in Adobe Photoshop. Then I went to select and mask to use
Refine the Edge Brush tool to brush over the edges.

After I had recolored his skin, I continue to recolor his shirt which is purple
in color.

After I had recolored his shirt, I realize that his shirt is not only purple
in color, it also conducts yellow in color.

So I decided to add the color to his shirt.

The first assignment of this module was carried out from Week 1 to Week 4 and
required the completion of Physical Collage, Digital Collage, Hearst Mansion,
and Recolor exercises.
Prior to this module, I had never used Adobe Photoshop, so every assignment
was a huge challenge for me but would be a helpful skill in the future. During
the first three weeks, the lecturer mainly covered the basics of Photoshop.
The most important tool in Photoshop is the selection and mask tool, which is
utilized in almost all photoshopped work. At first, I found it difficult to
navigate the workspace and the various tools available in Photoshop since I
was not good at using a mouse and always used a trackpad. However, after
several weeks of practice, I gradually became accustomed to these tools.
In these four weeks, I learned a lot of new knowledge and developed a strong
interest in Photoshop, although I sometimes did not fully understand the
functions, I will try to understand them or ask Mr. Martin for help. I am
looking forward to the following classes.
