✿ LECTURE RECAP

Project 1, MyTiger brief requires creating a digital illustration using Adobe Illustrator for an art competition. The focus is on composition theories, design principles, and typography to design a captivating cover page. Visual hierarchy and subtlety are important in guiding the viewer's attention and conveying the theme without revealing too much. Choosing a style that aligns with the intent and effectively highlights the topics is crucial. The resulting illustration will be visually engaging, and intriguing, and reflect the essence of the art competition.

The task involves conducting research on the 12 SDG goals and Maybank's MyTIGER values and compiling the findings and visual references into a single document or collaborative tool. This helps in exploring and organizing information related to a preferred topic, as well as gathering visual inspiration.

The challenges are:
  • You are to work only with the details in the competition brief
  • Include a logline to set up the mood

These values reflect the principles and ideals that guide Maybank's operations and interactions with its stakeholders.

Sustainable Development Goals

SDG stands for Sustainable Development Goals. The Sustainable Development Goals are a set of 17 global goals established by the United Nations in 2015. These goals aim to address various social, economic, and environmental challenges faced by countries worldwide. The SDGs cover a wide range of issues, including poverty, hunger, education, gender equality, clean energy, sustainable cities, climate action, and more. They provide a framework for countries and organizations to work towards achieving a more sustainable and equitable future by 2030.

Life Below Water

After conducting research on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), I have selected "Life Below Water" as the topic for my poster. This means that I will be focusing on the conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas, and marine resources as outlined in SDG 14. My poster will aim to raise awareness and promote action toward protecting marine ecosystems, addressing marine pollution, and ensuring the sustainable management of ocean resources.

The Goal of Life Below Water (SDG 14)
  • Conserve and sustainably use oceans, seas, and marine resources
  • Reduce marine pollution, including from land-based activities
  • Protect and restore marine ecosystems and their biodiversity
  • Implement sustainable fisheries management and end overfishing
  • Minimize the impacts of ocean acidification and address ocean warming
  • Enhance the conservation and sustainable use of coastal and marine areas
  • Strengthen the resilience of coastal communities to climate change
  • Promote sustainable marine-based tourism and ocean-related activities
  • Enhance scientific research and knowledge-sharing for marine conservation
  • Strengthen international cooperation to address marine issues
After choosing the topic of "Life Below Water," I conducted research on Pinterest to find relevant poster designs as inspiration. The objective was to explore visually compelling and impactful artworks that highlight the importance of marine life, conservation, and sustainable practices. By gathering ideas and inspiration from these designs, I aimed to create an engaging and informative poster that effectively communicates the significance of protecting our oceans and marine ecosystems.

I searched for poster templates that aligned with the style and concept I had in mind after reviewing other designers' works. These templates provided a starting point and reference for my own design, helping me establish a clear direction in terms of layout, typography, and overall composition. By exploring different templates, I was able to ensure a cohesive and visually appealing final poster.

✿ 2.0 DESIGN PROCESS

2.1 Ideation

After conducting extensive research on "Life Below Water," I proceeded to sketch my ideas using Procreate. Within the MyTIGER framework, I decided to focus on the value of "Relationship" for my design. This value emphasizes the importance of fostering meaningful connections and interactions with the ocean and its marine life. By selecting this theme, I aimed to create a visually engaging and thought-provoking representation of the significance of preserving and protecting our marine ecosystems.

Figure 4.1 Sketches of my design

In my design, I aim to portray the relationship between humans and marine life. Human activities have been detrimental to the ocean, which is the home of marine creatures. In my sketch, you can see that I transformed the tail of a dolphin into a piece of garbage. This detail is intended to convey the message that human pollution not only causes marine pollution but also leads to the death of numerous marine species, pushing them to the brink of extinction. It highlights the destructive impact of human corruption on the marine environment and the urgent need for conservation efforts.

2.1 Illustration Design

After completing my sketches on Procreate, I began the process of creating my poster using Adobe Illustrator. However, I encountered some challenges and faced difficulties due to my unfamiliarity with the software. The process took longer than expected as I strived to achieve the desired outcome. I felt unsatisfied with my drawings when transitioning from Procreate to Adobe Illustrator, as the tools and techniques differed. Despite the challenges, I persevered and continued to work on my poster, exploring different features and functionalities of Adobe Illustrator to improve my design.

Figure 4.3 Process of creating the poster

In the first step of creating my poster using Adobe Illustrator, I utilized the Gradient tool, which was introduced by Mr. Hafiz during our class, to depict the sky. I chose a gray color for the sky to symbolize the pollution caused by the nearby factory.

Figure 4.4 Process of creating the poster

Once I finished creating the sky, I proceeded to design the ocean and depict the toxic substances pouring into it. Using various shapes and colors in Adobe Illustrator, I aimed to illustrate the contamination and pollution of the ocean caused by human activities.

Lastly, I incorporated the element of rubbish into the design, symbolizing the toxic waste that is being poured into the ocean. To highlight the detrimental impact on marine life, I transformed the tail of a dolphin into a piece of garbage.

After receiving feedback from Miss Anis, I made a revision to the design by changing the color of the boat to grey. This alteration was done to clearly distinguish between the boat and the ocean, emphasizing their separation.

Final Outcome

Figure 5.1 Outline of the final outcome

Figure 5.2 Final Outcome

Through SDG 14, "Life Below Water," I decided to create a poster addressing this critical topic. My focus was on exploring the theme of "Relationship" from the MyTIGER values, which highlights the interconnectedness between humans (as the destroyers) and marine life (as the victims). In this thought-provoking poster, I aimed to shed light on the complex dynamic between our actions and the well-being of the ocean and its inhabitants.

The central imagery of the poster revolves around a person, representing human activities, pouring toxic substances into the Ocean. The person originates from a nearby factory, symbolizing industrial pollution and its contribution to the degradation of marine ecosystems. The choice of pouring toxic waste directly into the ocean is portrayed as a seemingly convenient and cost-effective solution, which underscores our collective negligence toward the consequences of our actions.

To emphasize the environmental impact, the poster showcases the toxic substances mixed with a variety of garbage and pollutants. This composition serves as a visual reminder of how our careless disposal of waste can harm the delicate balance of the ocean and pose significant threats to marine life. The transformation of the dolphin's tail into a piece of garbage symbolizes the direct effect of human actions on these magnificent creatures. Rather than depicting the harm in a graphic or explicit manner, this metaphorical representation encourages viewers to reflect on the impact of our choices and behaviors.

By creating this poster, my intention is to raise awareness and foster a sense of responsibility toward protecting the marine environment. Through visual storytelling and symbolic elements, I hope to evoke empathy and encourage viewers to reconsider their actions and choices that directly or indirectly affect life below water. Ultimately, I aspire to inspire positive change and promote a harmonious relationship between humans and the ocean, where both can thrive together in a sustainable manner.

“Kill pollution, or it will kill you”
