✿ LECTURE RECAP ✿

For Project 3, the task is to choose a story from a provided website and break it down into a 3-act structure consisting of an Introduction, Climax, and Epilogue. Based on this structure, you are required to create a digital triptych with three panels, each illustrating one of the acts.

To make your design more engaging, consider incorporating interesting plot twists that occur in each act. You can also highlight notable icons or symbolisms that are significant to the story.

Additionally, think about creating a premise preview that piques the readers' curiosity. This can be achieved through thoughtful composition, intriguing visuals, and compelling use of typography.

In summary, for Project 3, you will:

  • Choose a story from the provided website.
  • Break down the narrative into Introduction, Climax, and Epilogue.
  • Create a digital triptych with three panels, one for each act.
  • Incorporate interesting plot twists or notable symbols into your design.
  • Craft a premise preview that captivates the viewers and sparks their interest in the story.

Week 10

During this week, we delved into the concept of Chiaroscuro, a technique used in visual arts to create a strong contrast between light and dark. This technique plays with the interplay of light and shadow to enhance the dramatic effect of an artwork.

Chiaroscuro is commonly used to add the following elements to an artwork:

  • Contrast: It creates a strong contrast between light and dark areas, enhancing the visual impact and creating a sense of drama.
  • Depth: By manipulating light and shadow, Chiaroscuro adds depth and three-dimensionality to a composition, making it appear more realistic.
  • Volume: It helps in rendering objects with a sense of solidity and volume, making them appear more tactile and substantial.
  • Emphasis: Chiaroscuro allows artists to emphasize specific elements or areas of a composition by directing the viewer's attention through the use of light and shadow.
  • Mood: It can evoke a specific mood or atmosphere in an artwork, such as mystery, tension, or melancholy, by playing with the intensity and placement of light and shadow.
  • Realism: Chiaroscuro techniques contribute to creating a sense of realism in artwork by simulating the way light interacts with objects in the real world.
  • Texture: It helps in rendering the texture of objects by using light and shadow to create the illusion of surface qualities like roughness, smoothness, or sheen.
  • Visual Interest: Chiaroscuro adds visual interest and complexity to a composition by creating intricate patterns of light and shadow, enhancing the overall visual appeal.
By incorporating Chiaroscuro effectively, artists can achieve stunning visual effects and imbue their artworks with a heightened sense of depth, drama, and realism.

Week 11

In Week 11, we explored key concepts in Adobe Illustrator, such as patterns, drawing modes, and the width tool. Patterns allowed us to add texture and visual interest to our designs through repetitive motifs. Drawing modes provided us with greater control over how new shapes interacted with existing artwork. The width tool enabled us to adjust the thickness of paths and strokes, enhancing the visual impact of our designs. Overall, Week 11 expanded our skills and offered new possibilities in Illustrator.

Figure 1.2 Example from Lecture

In Adobe Illustrator, there are multiple drawing tools that offer different approaches to creating artwork. Two of these tools are the brush tool and the blob brush tool.

Brush Tool: Allows for easy and expressive strokes, offering a variety of styles for creating dynamic lines and smooth curves.

Blob Brush Tool: Enables intuitive and seamless creation of filled shapes with a single brush stroke, perfect for organic and merged designs.

After receiving a tutorial from the lecturer, I made the decision to apply that technique in order to create a chain design for use in Project 3.

✿ 1.0 IDEA DEVELOPMENT ✿

In Project 3, we were tasked with creating a digital triptych. The triptych consists of three panels that visually represent the three acts of a chosen story. We had to analyze the narrative of the story and break it down into an introduction, climax, and epilogue. The challenge was to illustrate each act using interesting twists in the plot or highlighting notable icons or symbolisms. The goal was to create a captivating premise preview that would intrigue the viewers and draw them into the story.

Through the website, I decided to choose the story "Hop-Frog" by Edgar Allan Poe. I analyzed the narrative and identified the three acts: introduction, climax, and epilogue.

1.1 Design Research

Act 1 - Setup
The story of "Hop-Frog" unfolds in an unspecified kingdom's palace, where a king known for his love of practical jokes and disregard for others reigns. Hop-Frog, a dwarf jester with a deformed figure, serves in the court alongside his companion Trippetta. Both suffer mistreatment and humiliation at the hands of the king and his courtiers. However, Hop-Frog's resilience, wit, and burning desire for justice remain intact. As a grand masquerade ball is announced, Hop-Frog sees an opportunity for revenge. With a carefully devised plan, he unleashes his retribution, exposing the cruelty and injustice of those who have wronged him and Trippetta.

Act 3 - Conflict
The king announces a grand masquerade ball in the palace, demanding everyone wear costumes. Hop-Frog sees an opportunity for revenge and proposes a special performance. Unknown to the court, he and Trippetta secretly prepare costumes resembling chained orangutans. At the masquerade, they surprise everyone, masquerading as the creatures. The courtiers mock them, unknowingly fueling Hop-Frog's plan. He sets the costumes ablaze, causing panic. In the chaos, Hop-Frog overpowers the king and courtiers, escaping with Trippetta. The story highlights Hop-Frog's determination for justice and poetic retribution against those who mistreated him, leaving the courtiers to face the consequences of their cruelty.

Act 3 - Resolution
Amidst the ensuing chaos, Hop-Frog utilizes his strength and agility to overpower the king and the courtiers, successfully avenging himself. With his plan executed, Hop-Frog and Trippetta manage to escape from the palace, leaving the courtiers to confront the consequences of their cruel behavior.

Story Summarize

Hop-Frog" by Edgar Allan Poe is a short story about a dwarf jester named Hop-Frog and his revenge on the king and his courtiers. The story is set in a kingdom where the king and his nobles enjoy mocking and mistreating Hop-Frog and his female companion, Trippetta, who is also a dwarf. Hop-Frog devises a plan to exact his revenge during a masquerade ball, where he dresses the king and his ministers as orangutans and sets them on fire. In the end, Hop-Frog and Trippetta escapes, leaving the king and his courtiers to a gruesome fate. The story explores themes of revenge, cruelty, and the limits of human morality.

✿ 2.0 DESIGN PROCESS ✿

I have chosen to use the style of tarot cards to express the story of "Hop-Frog." Tarot cards are known for their symbolic and mystical imagery, making them suitable for capturing the essence of the story and conveying its themes. The use of the tarot card style can add an intriguing and mysterious element to the visual representation of the narrative. It allows for the incorporation of symbolic elements and archetypal imagery that can enhance the storytelling and evoke a sense of depth and significance.

In this design, I used the design of tarot cards to create my Project 3 because I felt that it suited the style of tarot cards well. The story includes elements such as kings and subjects, which align with the characters and themes in tarot cards. By applying the design style of tarot cards, I hope to better convey the atmosphere and meaning of the story.

✿ REFLECTION ✿

I am pleased with the outcome of my Project 3. By choosing to incorporate the style of tarot cards, I was able to capture the essence of the story and create a visually engaging representation. The use of kings and subjects in the design added depth and symbolism, enhancing the overall narrative.

Throughout the project, I faced various challenges, particularly in finding the right balance between the story elements and the tarot card design. It required careful consideration of composition, color palette, and typography to ensure a cohesive and visually appealing result.

I also found that conducting research on tarot card designs and studying their symbolism greatly influenced my creative decisions. It allowed me to understand the significance behind each card and how it could be translated into my design.

Overall, this project provided an opportunity to explore a different artistic style and push my creative boundaries. It allowed me to delve deeper into the storytelling aspect of design and communicate the essence of the story through visual elements. I am proud of the final outcome and believe it effectively captures the spirit of the story using the tarot card aesthetic.
