✿ LECTURE ✿

In week 4, Mr. Shamsul briefed us on Project 1—an assignment to craft a captivating recipe poster inspired by a carefully curated video provided by the lecturer. Emphasizing attention to detail, Mr. Shamsul highlighted the need to translate the culinary journey into an engaging poster, requiring both design flair and a precise representation of the recipe's steps and ingredients. This project challenges us to fuse creativity with culinary understanding, aiming to visually bring the delectable recipe to life.

1.0 RESEARCH

In Project 1, Mr. Shamsul emphasized the powerful adage, "A picture is worth a thousand words," directing our focus toward creating a recipe poster that goes beyond aesthetics. Our task involves not only showcasing culinary artistry but also harnessing the visual medium to effectively transmit and communicate a message. Inspired by a carefully curated video from the lecturer, the poster must adeptly present substantial information in a compact and easily understandable format. Mr. Shamsul underscored the importance of using visuals to reveal data, enabling us to discover cause-effect relations and gain insights into what's happening. Additionally, our poster is expected to serve as a tool for periodically monitoring the evolution of specific parameters, making it a dynamic and informative representation of the culinary journey.

Blending ideas from two Pinterest examples, our project involves creating a recipe poster that communicates a message, presents information compactly, reveals data for cause-effect understanding, and periodically monitors parameter evolution.

2.0 SKETCHES

Before I start sketching out my idea for the recipe poster, I plan to watch the video attentively and write down the key details of the recipe, including ingredients, measurements, and step-by-step instructions.

I took a diligent approach to preparing for the recipe poster project by watching the movie not just once, but twice. The first viewing was dedicated to comprehending the overall steps involved in the culinary process. Subsequently, during the second viewing, my focus shifted to a meticulous and detailed observation, capturing each step with precision, second by second. This thorough understanding, acquired through the dual viewing process, forms the foundation for crafting a comprehensive and accurate representation of the recipe in my poster.

Figure 2.4 Recipe, Ingredients

Once I've ensured a thorough understanding of the recipe and gathered all the necessary ingredients, I embark on the next phase of the project: sketching out my creative ideas on a piece of paper. This initial sketching stage allows me to visually conceptualize how the recipe poster will come together, incorporating both the culinary elements and the design aspects. It serves as a preliminary canvas for translating the culinary journey into an engaging and aesthetically pleasing visual representation.

In the final stages of ideation, I've narrowed down my choices to the third and fourth concepts. These selected ideas strategically separate the wrapper and filling components, providing a structured and organized layout for the recipe poster. By opting for these specific concepts, I aim to strike a balance between visual appeal and clarity, ensuring that the audience can easily comprehend both the overarching recipe and the intricate details of each element. This decision reflects a deliberate effort to create a visually engaging yet easily digestible presentation for the culinary journey I'm illustrating.

I've experimented with various color palettes. Initially, I considered using a gradient color scheme, but the colors were too light, and since the flour's color is also light, so I had to opt for a different color instead of a light one.

3.0 DIGITALIZATION

Before delving into the creation of the actual poster, I employ the pen tool to meticulously draw out the various ingredients and steps of the recipe. This meticulous approach using the pen tool ensures precision in capturing the details of each element, allowing for a clean and polished representation.

During my initial attempt, I applied a gradient color scheme. However, when it came to the step of kneading the flour, I realized that due to the color choice, it became difficult to distinguish the flour. Recognizing this issue, I promptly halted the process of proceeding to the next step and began the task of changing the colors to address the visibility concern.

Subsequently, I created another artboard for the design. This time, I opted for an orange color as the background, and it appears to be a more suitable choice, providing a visually appealing and effective contrast for the elements in the poster.

Noting that the poster felt too plain and drawing inspiration from reference 2 on Pinterest, I decided to elevate the design. I introduced a half circle with a gradient color, strategically placed at the top and bottom of the poster. This adjustment was made to add visual interest and align the design with the impactful elements observed in the referenced example.

Suddenly, I noticed that the background color was too bright, causing the icons on the poster to lack prominence. The overall color scheme also felt a bit fatiguing to the eyes. Therefore, I made the decision to create another artboard, opting for a brown color as the background. This adjustment aims to address the issue of the overly bright background, ensuring that the icons on the poster stand out more prominently while providing a more visually comfortable experience.

In the final step, I included the name of the YouTuber, @pastagrannies, beneath the recipe title. I also added spacing to enhance clarity in the description of ingredients, particularly for "leek & Sausage." These adjustments were made to refine and finalize the overall presentation of the poster.

Following feedback from Mr. Shamsul, he suggested replacing the title with a font that captures the essence of Italy. This guidance prompted a reconsideration of the typography to evoke a more culturally fitting aesthetic for the recipe poster. I will explore font options that convey an Italian-inspired style to further enhance the overall design and thematic coherence.

✿ REFLECTION ✿

The process of creating the recipe poster involved several strategic decisions and iterative adjustments. Starting with a gradient color scheme, I quickly realized its impact on visibility, prompting a shift to a brown background. Inspired by a Pinterest reference, I introduced a gradient half circle for added visual interest. However, the bright background color proved fatiguing, leading to the creation of an alternative artboard with a brown background. Typography adjustments, such as placing the YouTuber's name below the title and spacing in ingredient descriptions, aimed at enhancing readability. This reflective journey underscores the significance of adaptability and careful balance in achieving a visually appealing and effective recipe poster.
